Native Village Of Port Lions

Transportation Department

The Transportation Department has been re-designed and is again operational. Rodney Knagin was hired in February, 2010 as the Transportation Coordinator.

The goal of the Transportation Department is to seek funding to conduct maintenance and construction projects on Port Lions roads. In order to receive funding we have to update our BIA/IRR (Bureau of Indian Affairs Indian Reservation Roads) Inventory yearly. The inventory consists of routes, which are our roads (ex. Route 0001 is Main Street).

The routes can be more than just roads; they can be bridges, trails, future roads, scenic byways, bicycle trails, and the list goes on. We currently have 22 routes on our inventory and are ready to add more.

We had our first community meeting on April 17th, 2008. During this meeting we gathered suggestions and created a list of routes that the community would like to see on our inventory. These routes will be added by March 15th 2009.

The community also made a list of our top ten priorities, or construction projects. A priority list consists of routes and the order that the community would like to see construction projects done for those routes. We are happy to announce that the ferry dock is currently the community’s top priority. This means that as soon as the funds are generated, the ferry dock will be the first construction project to take place.

We generate IRR funds based on what is in our inventory. The amount of funds per route and year is based on many characteristics of that route; length, width, surface type, pot holes, housing units, and traffic counts are just some of the criteria that the BIA looks at to determine the amount we generate. The inventory updates are very time-consuming and need to be kept up with year round. There is still much to learn about this department, but we are off to a great start.
